Birmingham’s Capital Growth Buchalter Inc. said it will build a $20 million retail center in Tuscaloosa that will be anchored by a Publix Super Market.
The 87,000-square-foot shopping center will be called Capital Market Center and is located on Highway 69 South and Southview Lane in Tuscaloosa.
The 20-acre development should begin with construction in the spring of this year and a news release said the developer is working with local, regional and national retailers to set up shops in the center.
The center will be built in two phases and Publix is expected to occupy its space by the end of this year.
“We are looking forward to bringing the highest quality grocery-anchored shopping center to support the growth in the South Tuscaloosa area,” said Robert Buchalter, head of Capital Growth Buchalter.
Paul B. Krebs & Associates designed the center and Gonzalez-Strength & Associates provided engineering design. The Shopping Center Group of Birmingham will lease the remaining retail space.
Capital Growth Buchalter is based in Birmingham and is a division of Capital Growth Properties Inc., based in Minnesota.
Buchalter is currently developing Commons North, also in Tuscaloosa, a $40 million, 50-acre mixed-use development and previously developed another Publix-anchored center in Northport, near Tuscaloosa.
