The joy of giving and the wonder of children are central to the holiday season. And for families whose little ones are in the hospital, making memories and moments matter can be even more important.
In Birmingham, Capital Growth Buchalter (CGB) and other donors help make sure the magic of the season finds every patient and family at the Sugar Plum Shop, a toy store set up right in the hospital. The Sugar Plum Shop is Children’s of Alabama’s program for in-patients and their families who spend the holidays at the hospital. Here, parents and caregivers can “shop” for gifts at no cost to them for their patient and his or her siblings.
This festive and meaningful event is stocked entirely with donated items and brought to life by the generosity of the greater Birmingham community. Earlier this week, CGB employees donated more than 100 toys to the effort and delivered them to the hospital’s Winter Warehouse.
Kelly Markert, community coordinator for Children’s Hospital, manages the effort and helps to ensure that the Sugar Plum Shop is a place where families can carefully and freely shop for their loved ones. In 2021, the program served more than 700 children including patients and their siblings.
Involvement with the Children’s of Alabama Sugar Plum Shop is just one of the many ways that Capital Growth Buchalter gives back each holiday season. The company also delivers holiday treats to those in government service, community organizations, and others who help to strengthen and support our local communities.
